Sewer baby taken home by grandparents

THE newborn boy who was rescued from a toilet pipe four days ago was brought home by his grandparents last night from a hospital in Pujiang County, Zhejiang Province, police said.

The couple went to the hospital at night to avoid media attention and give the baby a normal environment to grow up, police said.

Meanwhile, the man who had a one-night stand with the boy's 22-year-old mother and denied the baby was his has been located. But he didn't come to claim his son.

The woman went a shared bathroom after she felt abdominal cramps and delivered the baby in a squat toilet. The baby with placenta still attached slipped into the sewer before she was able to catch him, police learned.

She immediately told the landlady that she heard a baby crying in the toilet. Firefighters were called in and they spent two hours to take down an L-shaped pipe and pulled the baby from it.

The woman did not reveal she is the baby's mother because she felt shame for giving birth without marriage, but confessed later after police found blood-stained tissues and baby toys in her rented room.

Since she had no intention to abandon the baby, she won't be prosecuted, police said.

The baby suffered only with minor abrasions in the two-hour sewer ordeal and is in good condition, but his mother is suffering complications from childbirth, police said.
