Sex assault suspect in Australia is deputy director of Guangdong planning institute
A CHINESE official charged with raping a university student during a tour to Australia has been confirmed to be deputy director of Guangdong Province’s Urban-rural Planning and Design Institute in Guangzhou, capital of southern Guangdong Province.
According to Melbourne-based The Age newspaper, Song Jingsong, 43, visited Australia as a government delegate in August. He was caught in New South Wales for sexual assault using his hands on a female university student who was working as a tour guide. The victim’s nationality or other details were not disclosed.
After he was transferred to Melbourne in Victoria State, he was released on bail on condition that he handed over his passport and reported daily to police in Melbourne, according to The Age.
On Thursday, Song applied to have his bail modified so he could return to China. He said he could report to Guangzhou police every day and returned to Victoria State in Australia once a month.
Local police objected to his motion over concerns that he would not return. The court had been scheduled to hear the case yesterday but one of witnesses couldn’t attend and the hearing was delayed. It hasn’t been decided when to hold the hearing.
The Southern Metropolis Daily checked files and found that Song was deputy director of Guangdong Urban-rural Planning and Design Institute. His identity was confirmed by an administrative official with the institute.
But the official said the institute didn’t plan his tour to Australia and had no information on the case until the overseas newspaper published its report.
An official with China’s Consulate General in Melbourne said a diplomatic officer is handling issues related to the case.
