Sex questions are psycho test for would-be civil servants
SICHUAN authorities said their questions on sex life satisfaction in the province's annual civil servant exam on Saturday were not meant to peek into examinees' privacy, but were part of a psychological test.
Sichuan Professional Testing Authority further clarified that the questions covering sex were targeted at 739 applicants for jobs in the public security department, according to a report in the local West China Metropolitan Daily.
The report said the testing authority made the clarification because earlier news reports had misunderstood the questions and hurt the reputation of the civil servant exam.
Some Sichuan newspapers said earlier that 192,138 people went to the exam to compete for 8,000 jobs and most of them were embarrassed by the question asking if they were satisfied with their sex life.
In response, the testing officials explained that the sex-related questions were part of a psychological test to see if the exam takers were suitable for public security jobs.
They said the psychological test was important to measure the applicant's mental status and can tell if he is prone to losing self-control when under great pressure.
These questions were selected from a question bank that had been used by domestic and oversee psychologists for years, they added.
"Exam takers who are not married may choose to leave the answers blank, and that would not affect their final score," the report quoted one official as saying.
