Shamed official appeals against bribery sentence

DISGRACED official Lei Zhengfu has appealed against the 13-year jail sentence for bribery, his lawyer said yesterday.

Lei, the former Party secretary of Beibei District in southwest China's Chongqing City, was caught on video having sex with a young woman, Zhao Hongxia.

The clip went viral when it surfaced last November.

He was later convicted of taking nearly 3.16 million yuan (US$515,396) in bribes between 2007 and 2012 by the city's No.1 Intermediate People's Court on June 28.

His lawyer, Lu Nie, said Lei objected to the facts and evidences that the court had accepted. Lei also stressed that his involvement in the sex scandal violated Party discipline but not laws, Legal Evening News reported.

On June 19, Lei denied pocketing 3 million yuan in a bribe linked to the sex video scandal.

Lei claimed Zhao asked him to marry her after she had secretly videotaped their intimate moments as early as 2008. But he complained to her boss Xiao Ye. Xiao usually lured officials into having sex with women and recorded their encounters and blackmailed them later.

Xiao demanded 3 million yuan as loan from Lei.

Lei told the court he did not embezzle state assets, instead asked construction contractor Ming Yongzhi to lend Xiao the money. Lei testified that after Xiao got the money he only returned 1 million yuan.

On June 28, Xiao was sentenced to 10 years in jail. He has also appealed the ruling.
