Shandong declares suspected infection

A MAN in Shandong Province is the latest suspected case of infection with the bird flu virus which has killed 21 people in China so far. If confirmed by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, he would become the eastern province's first H7N9 patient.

The 36-year-old from the city of Zaozhuang is currently being treated for flu-like symptoms in hospital.

Nine people who had been in close contact with him are under observation but had shown no signs of infection.

Zhejiang Province announced two new H7N9 cases yesterday, bringing the province's total to 40, officials said.

A 54-year-old office clerk from Hangzhou and a 32-year-old farmer from neighboring Jiangxi Province are being treated in two local hospitals.

So far, five people have died in the province, while two have gone home after making a full recovery.

To date, the deadly bird flu has infected 104 people in China.
