Shandong man attacks school class, kills himself in fire

FIVE children and a teacher were injured today when a man attacked them with an iron hammer before killing himself at a school in Shandong Province.

The man soaked himself in gasoline and grabbed two children in his arms before setting himself on fire at Shangzhuang Primary School in Weifang City, Shandong, said a spokesman for the city government.

The two children were pulled away by teachers, but the man died at the scene, said the spokesman.

All five injured children had been taken to hospital, where doctors said their conditions were all stable and not life-threatening, he said.

The attacker, Wang Yonglai, a farmer from Shangzhuang Village, of Jiulong Community in the city's Fangzi District, broke down a side gate of the school with his motorcycle at 7:40 a.m., said the police.

Wielding the hammer, he injured five children and struck the foot of one teacher who tried to block him.

Police are investigating the attack.

It was the third school attack in China in three days.

Yesterday, 29 children and three adults were injured by a man armed with knife at the Taixing kindergarten in eastern Jiangsu Province.

On Wednesday, 16 children and a teacher at a primary school in Guangdong Province were attacked.
