Shandong police rescue 37 babies from traffickers

Shandong Province police have rescued 37 babies and captured 103 suspects in their latest crackdown on baby trafficking, CCTV reported on Monday night.

The suspects were accused of transporting mothers-to-be from Sichuan and Yunan provinces and put them up in an abandoned factory in Ji’ning City, where they gave birth to the babies. They also kidnapped infants in the two provinces, according to police.

Babies were sold from 50,000 yuan (US$8,060.75) to 80,000 yuan each, CCTV reported.

None of the babies were in good health when they were rescued because traffickers treated them as “items.” The babies were placed in suitcases during transportation to the buyers and fed instant noodles and leftovers, according to police.

Seven of the babies were born with infectious diseases such as AIDS or syphilis. Police said the mothers knew about the risks but were motivated by the opportunity to make “easy money.”
