About 4:45pm yesterday when the train running on the newly opened Shanghai-Beijing high-speed railway was about to reach Dezhou Station, passengers in the No. 10 carriage heard an alarm and saw the train's speed displayed on the electronic screen suddenly drop to 280 kilometers per hour from 310 kilometers per hour.

Later, a 40-year-old man was found smoking in the lavatory next to the No. 10 carriage and was taken away by train attendants, according to the report.

Smoking is banned for the entire high-speed train journey. An alarm is automatically activated when smoke is detected.
