Shanxi chicken cleared of safety concerns

IT is safe to eat chicken raised allegedly with chemical-tainted feed and sold in the KFC restaurants, claimed agricultural officials in north China's Shanxi Province.

Earlier media reports said Shanxi-based Suhai Group, a key supplier to the KFC fast-food chain in China, added toxic industrial chemicals to chicken feed to make chickens grow faster and ready for slaughter in just 45 days.

The reports said the feedstuff Suhai prepared was so toxic that it could even kill flies.

The province's food safety officials began to probe the allegations and tests of 17 samples of Suhai feedstuff and chicken all proved they met the national standards, Shanxi Province Agriculture Department said yesterday.

The fast-growing chicken was introduced from the United States. It is normal for this specie to grow mature in 45 days. The so-called toxin in the feed is an animal drug allowed by the law, the report said.

Suhai also denied media allegations, saying its chicken meat "has no problem."
