Shanxi couple caught with luxuries worth millions at HK border

A young couple from Shanxi Province was found carrying luxury goods worth about 4 million yuan (US$630,000) as they drove from Hong Kong into Shenzhen on Tuesday night. Customs officials seized their goods for tax evasion.

The couple in their 30s tried to cross the border through a green lane reserved for travelers with duty-free belongings when they were stopped by the customs officials, the Southern Metropolis reported.

The officials found seven brand-new iPhone4S, handbags from Prada, Marc Jacobs and Daniel Hechter, numerous Cartier jewelries and watches in the couple's Toyota MPV. They also found 28 diamonds and two large emeralds in their pockets and 540,000 HK dollars in their bags.

The couple said they were in the coal business in Shanxi Province and they bought these luxury goods for personal use.

Shenzhen Customs said it was the largest luxury smuggling case they had handled since 2007. They said the couple might not be smuggling the items to sell for profit, but they tried to evade import tax worth up to 50,000 yuan so they will face indictment.
