Shanxi legislator has 4 wives, 10 children
A legislator in Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi Province, is found to have three "legitimate" wives and nine "legitimate" children, in stark violation of Chinese laws, the Legal Weekly reported today.
Li Junwen, a district congress member and the head of a village, reportedly also have a fourth "wife" and one more child.
China's Marriage Law forbids polygamy and the country enforces the one-child policy and allows a second child only under special circumstances. In the rural areas, if the first child is a girl, the family can have a second child.
Li's first wife, Hu Yongxian, gave birth to four girls and gave the youngest to a relative. The couple adopted a boy later, villagers said.
Li's "second wife" is Hu Yanyan and "third wife" is Li Honghong, the villagers confirmed.
Wang Fumei, the "fourth wife," is a worker in a concrete mixing plant owned by Li Junwen and they lived like a couple in the plant and Wang bore him a son.
Li's polygamy scandal came to light when the newly-elected village committee checked the Hukou, household registry, to prepare cash dividends for each family.
The local family planning officials said a child born out of marriage cannot get registered in a Hukou.
Li is now facing court investigation and his job as a people's congress deputy has been suspended.
