Shanxi police busts mafia ring led by ex cop

POLICE in north China's Shanxi Province have cracked a decade-long mafia-style gang allegedly led by a former senior police officer, arresting him and 55 other suspects, the Bejing Morning Post reported today.

The alleged head of the ring, Guan Jianjun, has been arrested for abusing his previous position as a chief of the police's patrol team in Yicheng District, Yangquan City, to shield a group of armed gangsters who allegedly garnered more than 259.4 million yuan (US$ 38.94 million) and owned 27 properties in Beijing valued at some 100 million yuan through multiple illegal activities, said Shanxi police on Thursday.

Guan and his members are facing more than 20 criminal charges for organizing prostitution, illegal casinos, drug trafficking, robbery, extortion, and illegal possession and trade of firearms, according to the Public Security Department of Shanxi Province.

Police said they had frozen the crime syndicate's bank accounts and sealed off properties belonging to the gang members in Beijing, the newspaper said.
