Shanxi police crack baby trafficking network
POLICE in north China's Shanxi Province have broken up a criminal network that allegedly sold 52 babies in Beijing, Shanghai and five provinces.
The Yingxian County police of Shanxi's Shuozhou City have taken into custody 44 suspects and three vehicles allegedly involved in the trafficking. They also froze 800,000 yuan (US$117,000) profit from the trade, today's Shan Jin City News reported.
The network was uncovered after Yingxian police caught Henan Province natives Zhao Dongsheng, Zhao Hongtao and Zhao Hongyong trying to take a baby boy out of the county on May 8, the report said.
The three, father and sons, told police they were engaged in baby trafficking with Yingxian natives Zhao Fenglin and Yan Yonghua. Police caught the mother and daughter on May 10.
With information from the five captives, police discovered a huge baby trafficking network and caught another 39 suspects in Beijing, Shanghai and five provinces.
Investigation showed Zhao and Yan had developed the network in 2007. Yingxian natives Dong Xiaoxia, Li Shifeng and Song Meili acted as brokers and provided baby information to the mother and the daughter.
Zhao and Yan bought boys for 25,000 yuan each and girls for 19,000 yuan from Shuozhou and Hebei Province.
They then sold 52 babies - 19 boys and 33 girls - to buyers including the Zhaos. Boys were sold for 35,000 yuan each and girls for 25,000 yuan.
The buyers then sold the babies to families in Shanghai and Beijing as well as Hebei, Shandong, Guangdong, Fujian and Shanxi provinces.
Police are continuing the investigation.
