Sharp rise expected in aging population
CHINA will have an additional 8 million people yearly reaching 60 years of age starting this year as the country speeds its progress to a grayer society, a top senior population official said.
Wu Yushao, vice dean of the National Committee on Aging, told Xinhua news agency that seniors living apart from their children account for nearly half of the total aged across the nation, with 49.7 percent in urban areas and 48.9 percent in rural areas.
Wu was attending a work conference for community education for seniors in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province.
Wu said China will step up further education for seniors to respond to the graying society.
There are 36,000-plus education institutions targeting seniors across the nation attracting more than 4 million participants.
