Shenzhen hit by blackout, traffic in havoc
PARTS of Shenzhen, the south China city bordering Hong Kong, experienced two-hour blackout last night, which paralyzed traffic and stranded hundreds of train passengers.
Shenzhen power supplier said a 500KVA transformer substation in Longgang District broke down around 8pm and triggered the blackout, but the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The outage delayed 19 trains for up to 70 minutes, including bullet trains on the Guangzhou-Shenzhen High Speed Rail, leaving hundreds of passengers waiting in stations, the Guangzhou Daily reported today
Policemen were mobilized to direct traffic as traffic lights were off. The power outage also caused panic among people trapped in elevators.
However, hospitals were not affected thanks to their standby generators, the report said.
