Shenzhen official gets death sentence for bribery
A district leader in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for taking bribes of 5 million yuan (US$824,200) and 35.9 million HK dollars in cash.
Zhong Xinming, deputy mayor of Longgang District, was convicted of bribery he committed between 2007 and 2010 to help developers to win land use contracts, the court said.
Zhong was in charge of the construction of Universiade projects and Metro Line 3, the Shenzhen City Intermediate People's Court said.
His brother Zhong Weiming, the legal representative of a limited company, was given a 12-year sentence for taking 2.13 million yuan and 33 million HK dollars in bribes, the court said.
Wu Weiguang, the CEO of a local construction company, was sentenced to 11 years for offering 33.6 million HK dollars in bribes.
The three convicts are going to appeal the court ruling after the trial, according to today's Guangzhou Daily.
