Shenzhen police blamed for deadly crossroad collision
A faulty traffic light caused two vehicles to collide at a crossroad in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province on July 10, killing three and injuring another three. And a law expert said traffic police are responsible for the accident.
A concrete mixer crashed with a van at the crossroad of Ruyi Road and Beitong Road in Shenzhen when the traffic light turned red and green together, the China Youth Daily reported today.
"The traffic department should be responsible for the accident since it was caused by a defective traffic light," said Zhang Tingzhu, a law professor at the Institute of Transport Management under the Ministry of Transport.
He said relevant laws require the traffic department to keep traffic lights in good condition. If the lights are broken, they should put road signs and repair them immediately.
A Shenzhen resident, identified as "Ashui_Aaron" on Weibo, posted a warning several days before the accident and urged traffic police to repair the malfunctioning light. But traffic police did nothing.
"Even though the police are to blame, the drivers should also drive slowly when crossing an intersection," said Zhang.
