Shenzhen urban management squad silences victim with cash
URBAN management officials in Shenzhen, southern Guangdong Province, beat up a fruit vender and paid him 7,000 yuan (US$1,076) to seal his mouth, Shanghai Morning Post reported today.
The 34-year-old victim, Li Yong, from central Henan Province, had been selling fruit in Shenzhen for four years. On Saturday afternoon he was attacked by several urban management officials with sticks because he refused to remove his stall from the pavement, the report said.
Li said he was hit in the head and feet and was bleeding. Some witnesses called for police and ambulance but Li refused to leave. He smashed the window of the officials' vehicle and demanded to talk with their superiors.
Police soon came and took away Li and the officials who beat him, the report said.
When contacted by a reporter yesterday, Li said he didn't want to talk about the case anymore because he had received 7,000 yuan to keep his mouth shut and had signed an agreement with the urban management authority.
"I didn't want their money but I have to make ends meet," Li told the reporter, who also learned that Li agreed never to blame the officials or seek additional medical payment in future by signing the paper.
An official with the Shenzhen Urban Management Department said no official had beaten Li and he got the injuries himself while scuffling with the officials, the report said.
