Shenzhou-10 will blast into space this month
China will launch the Shenzhou-10 spacecraft later this month, sending three astronauts, including one woman, into space, the spokesperson of the country's manned space program said today.
The Long March 2F rocket carrying the Shenzhou-10 spacecraft was sent to the launch platform at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu Province this morning, the official announced.
The Shenzhou-10 crew have completed their training and are ready for the mission, the spokesperson said. Their training included practicing the experiments they will carry out in space as well as a simulation of the living conditions they will experience.
"The astronauts are ready both physically and mentally and they know how to skillfully operate the spacecraft," the official added.
All systems and equipment on the Shenzhou-10 and rocket are in good condition. Further tests will be made in the days leading up to the launch.
Wang Yaping, a former air force pilot, will be one of the astronauts. She will be China's second female astronaut sent to space after Liu Yang became the first aboard Shenzhou-9 in 2012.
The Shenzhou-10 will dock with the orbiting lab module Tiangong-1.
"The three astronauts will stay in orbit for 15 days, including 12 days when the Shenzhou-10 is docked with the Tiangong-1," said Zhou Jianping, head designer of China's manned space program.
Chinese astronauts carried out a manual docking with the module for the first time last June and lived and worked in it for about 10 days.
