Shenzhou-9 astronauts ready to enter space lab at 5:30pm
CHINA'S Shenzhou-9 spacecraft finished its first docking mission and joined with the Tiangong-1 space lab module at 2pm today to let the country's first female astronaut and two male crewmates to enter the space lab.
The astronauts will wear thinner and more convenient outfits to enter the space lab at around 5:30pm.
They then will live in the bus-sized module for about 10 days, conduct medical tests on the effects of weightlessness on the human body, and perform other scientific and engineering tasks on Tiangong-1, which was put into orbit last September.
The docking was broadcast live on China Central Television. A camera showed the 43-year-old Liu Wang, who takes charge of docking, left his seat about an hour after the docking and tried to open the three cabin doors between the spacecraft and the lab module.
The first female astronaut Liu Yang, a 34-year-old air force pilot, was holding a video camera and shooting the whole process of the docking.
Flight leader Jing Haipeng, 46, helped Liu Wang adjust his body position as he worked to open the doors in the gravity-free cabin.
Two astronauts will live and work inside the module to test its life-support systems while the third will remain in the capsule to deal with any emergency.
The module has separate "bedrooms" for male and female astronauts. They can attach their sleeping bags in any position inside the gravity-free module.
Fitness equipment such as bicycle ergometer, chest developer and neuromuscular electrical stimulator will help astronauts reduce the effects of weightlessness and maintain their cardiac and muscular functions.
