Ship capsizes in Yangtze, 2 dead, 7 missing

Two children died and seven others were missing after a cargo ship capsized in the Yangtze River off Zhenjiang in Jiangsu Province early this morning.

The ship, Changqing 16, was anchored in the port of Zhenjiang when it overturned and sank at 2:25am today. The 24 people on board all fell into the river.

Seventeen were brought to shore by 5am, but two children died later despite rescue efforts, local maritime authority said.

More than 10 boats were dispatched to the area to join in the rescue. Other ships in the area were also notified to look for survivors.

The cause of the accident is still unknown, authorities said.

Changqing 16, carrying 10,168 tons of iron ore, arrived in Zhenjiang from Majishan Island off the coast of Zhejiang Province.
