Shoddy construction blamed for roof collapse

POOR construction led to the collapse of a grandstand roof in Erdus City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, in December, said a government spokesman yesterday.

Wang Meibin, spokesman of Ejin Horo Banner government, Inner Mongolia, said part of the unfinished steel roof collapsed around midnight on December 15 without causing any casualties.

"An expert panel composed of members of the China Steel Structure Association has concluded that poor joining work caused instability in steel beams, which led to the accident," said the spokesman.

He said police were involved in the investigation undertaken by China State Construction Engineering. And Shanghai Baoye Group.

The unfinished stadium was last used in August last year for horse racing, archery and Mongolian wrestling competitions.

Construction restarted after the sports event ended. The most recent work was mainly aimed to test temperature-induced distortion of the steel structure, Wang said.

He said 24 supporting beams which did not pass the test were dismantled in November. The construction companies suspended the work on December 5 due to freezing weather.
