Shoddy work blamed for apartment collapse
SHODDY materials and substandard renovations caused the collapse of a five-story apartment building in Fenghua city, Zhejiang Province, last Saturday, according to experts.
Those found liable will face legal proceedings from the city government, Oriental Morning Post reported today.
The ruins of the building may be demolished today, the report said. The building fell down in early hours of September 5. No one was hurt as residents had been evacuated eight hours before.
The building was located in a low-lying area and its foundations rotted after being immersed in water. Investigations also found that many home owners had altered their apartments substantially, and this combination of factors led to the collapse, experts said.
Thirty-six families in the neighboring building, which was built by the same developer, were also evacuated from their homes.
