Short-lived building due to official carelessness

AN office building and overpass which were just built at a cost of millions of yuan are to be demolished to make way for a high-speed railway in Dandong of northeast Liaoning Province.

China News Service reported today that the 10-million-yuan (US$1.52 million) office building will be tore down in October because it stands in the way of a planned high-speed railway linking Dandong with Shenyang, the provincial capital.

As compensation, a new building will be built 20 meters away from the current site and the overpass will be reconstructed as well to let for the railway pass underneath.

The railway project had been proposed before the construction of the office building and the overpass. Local authorities did not consider its consequence in building their project, thus causing massive waste of public money and resources, according to the report.
