Sichuan official cheated for quake relief funds
THE vice mayor of Guangyuan City in southwest Sichuan Province is being probed by disciplinary authorities in the province for corruption while he was in charge of earthquake relief efforts in the past three years, Xinhua reported today.
Wu Lianqi, 47, has been held by authorities for investigation into his "serious violation of discipline" since late April, officials told Xinhua.
It was reported that Wu's corruption accusations covered the period when he was the Party secretary of Jian'ge County from 2005 to 2008. The county in the jurisdiction of Guangyuan was affected by the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake.
A source close to the government said Wu was in the position to put Jian'ge on the list of 41 worst-hit areas in need of national relief funds though the county didn't suffer heavy losses, the report said.
Wu was involved in "a series of activities" for post-earthquake reconstruction, which drew the attention of investigators.
