Sichuan political adviser investigated for corruption
The TOP political adviser in Sichuan Province is being investigated for suspected economic violations, China’s top disciplinary watchdog announced yesterday.
Li Chongxi, chairman of the Sichuan Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, is the third senior Sichuan official being investigated by the Central Commission for Discipline Investigation.
An anonymous insider said Li’s downfall might be linked to economic problems, a term for corruption, Beijing News reported.
Some provincial officials said they had known Li had been placed under investigation as they had heard he had been restricted from traveling overseas. Despite this, Li had still appeared rather frequently in the media spotlight.
He made his last public appearance on Friday when he led a meeting as the top political adviser, the newspaper reported.
Li took charge of the local advisory body this year.
He had worked in a pharmaceutical factory before he was promoted to the provincial Party discipline investigation commission in 1982.
In August 2000, he was appointed to the secretary general of the provincial Party committee.
Guo Yongxiang, former vice governor of Sichuan and chairman of the provincial federation of literary and art circles, was then Li’s deputy.
Guo took over the position in May 2002, after Li was promoted to secretary of the provincial discipline inspection commission.
An investigation into Guo’s suspected disciplinary violations began in June.
