Sichuan town official suspended over handling of earthquake supplies

AN official of a Sichuan town has been suspended for the way he handled 2008 earthquake relief supplies that had gone bad or were unsuitable for distribution, and for driving away residents who found the old supplies, according to a report by Beijing Youth Daily.
People from Xinsheng town in Sichuan’s Mianyang city, an area hard hit by the May 12, 2008 earthquake, found mildewed and rotten instant noodles, bread and rice, as well as some worn-out clothes and bottled water, after they detected bad odors coming from a local government office on April 23.
The noodles and bread, produced in 2008, looked the same as those distributed to villages after the earthquake, the report said.
Guo Fangping, the Party branch secretary of the town, drove away the suspicious villagers and asked his subordinates to move the food somewhere else, the newspaper said.
Videos about the incident were uploaded to the Internet on Monday, leading to public criticism of the official’s actions.
The Xinsheng government yesterday confirmed that the noodles, bread and bottled water were relief supplies for earthquake victims, which were found to be either out of date or spoiled when they were received.
However, the goods were noted disposed of as they should have been, but were forgotten about.
They were piled in a space with donated clothes, which were worn-out and unsuitable to be handed out to villagers, a government official said.
Among the goods, 12 bags of rice were meant to be handed out to townspeople during New Year’s Day and the Spring Festival in 2009, the official said. However, they had been soaked by rain during transportation and had spoiled.
Guo was suspended over improper treatment of the supplies and for inappropriately handling the townspeople’s discovery of the spoiled goods, he said.
