Sick Kids in Guangdong
EXCESSIVE blood lead levels have been found in 96 children in a town in Guangdong Province as of yesterday.
Some children had abnormal hair loss last year in Dongtang Town and early this month it was confirmed they had high blood levels.
Between Wednesday and Friday, 235 children between three and 14 years old had been screened for blood lead in Dongtang.
Lead, zinc and sulfur are mined in Dongtang. Big smelting plants have also set up in the area in recent years.
Villagers said they suspect the big smelting plants are causing lead pollution.
The government said environment protection department officials have enhanced supervision of nearby plants. Pollution checks on soil and air quality haven't been finished.
