Sick mom inspires kidnapping

TWO brothers who held a woman hostage at knifepoint on Tuesday morning were trying to raise money to help their sick mother, police said.

The woman was rescued unhurt and the brothers arrested after a two hour stand-off in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, today's New Express reported.

The brothers, surnamed Zhang, come from Kaixian County, Chongqing Municipality, police told the Guangzhou-based newspaper.

They kidnapped a woman surnamed Kuang after she got off a bus. Claiming they were raising medical fees for their mother, the brothers demanded a ransom of 20,000 yuan (US$2,928) from the police who came to rescue the woman.

After negotiating for some time police rescued the woman with a surprise attack.

Police later contacted officials at the brothers' hometown and confirmed that their mother was ill and in urgent need of expensive medical treatment.

Their mother was seriously hurt after falling when she was spraying crops, according to a village official surnamed Lei. The official said the brothers were pleasant but their home was impoverished.

After hearing their story, Yao Junnan, one of the police negotiators, expressed sympathy for their plight.

"They have a deep love for their mother, but it's foolish to raise money by kidnapping," he said.
