Signal equipment defect responsible for deadly train crash
Preliminary investigation shows a signal equipment design defect at Wenzhou South Railway Station resulted in the bullet train crash on Saturday which killed 39 passengers onboard and injured nearly 200, the Shanghai Railway Bureau said at a conference this morning.
After being hit by thunder, a malfunction caused the signal equipment to mistakenly show a green light which should have been red at the time, according to Xinhua News Agency citing the railway bureau director An Lusheng.
The dispatcher didn't alarm the train drivers in advance, which also led to the collision between the two bullet trains, said the railway bureau director An.
The signal equipment was designed by a Beijing institution and was put into operation on September 28, 2009, An said.
After a lightning strike caused the signal equipment at Wenzhou South Railway Station to malfunction, the staff on duty didn't realize the wrong signals were possibly showing and they also failed to deal with the malfunction in time, said the director.
The problems exposed the weak management of the railway department and inadequate training of its staff, he added.
Saturday's high-speed train crash in Wenzhou in east China's Zhejiang Province left 192 people injured. More than 10 are in a serious condition. The D301 train rear-ended the D3115, which stalled after losing power due to a lightning strike.
