Singer burned in TCM accident

TAIWAN pop singer Chyi Chin suffered severe burns yesterday while receiving a traditional Chinese medicine treatment at his home in Beijing, according to his agency said.

Chyi, 41, was diagnosed with second-degree burns to his body and face, it said.

Chyi invited a therapist to his home at around 2am to conduct cupping therapy, a treatment believed to be an effective way of relieving fatigue. But the therapist from a heath-care center accidentally poured alcohol onto Chyi's back and it went on fire.

Xia Yun, a TCM doctor of the Shanghai No. 10 People's Hospital, said cupping would normally not cause burns.

Cupping, or huo guan, an ancient treatment, relies upon creating localized suction to mobilize blood flow in order to promote healing. A doctor first heats the cup by burning alcohol inside the cup, and then applies it to the skin. A vacuum is created and the skin and muscle is drawn into the cup.

"I cannot understand why the alcohol was poured onto his back," said Xia. The burns Chyi suffered would be sure to leave scars, Xia said.

The statement from the singer's agency said that Chyi would not be involved in any form of public performance or activity for the next two to three months.

The Taiwan singer gained acclaim with the release of his album "See Her Slip Away Again" in 1981.
