Sinking of Nanjing's landmark arouses alarm

THE management company of a landmark building in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, said the signs of land subsidence around the building were "normal" after netizens posted photos of big gaps between the building's concrete base and the ground.

The photos have raised public concerns over the safety of the Nanjing International Exhibition Center, local Yangtze Evening News reported today.

Some netizens were worried that the sunken foundation would jeopardize the whole building and they criticized the management company for not giving proper maintenance to the building.

The company explained that the gap was the result of the building's natural subsidence, which was inevitable since the center was built more than 10 years ago.

The company's general manager assured the public of the building's safety, saying the state of subsidence was still within an acceptable level. He said the company would monitor the situation closely and work on its repair.
