Sinopec probes staff liability for man's death
SINOPEC, China's biggest oil supplier, is conducting a probe after media reported that its workers in a gas station in Hubei Province refused to fuel an ambulance in their off hours, causing a patient to die on route to the hospital.
Chen Qianjun, 57, fell off his third-floor home in Badong County on Friday afternoon and was in a coma. He was rushed to a major hospital in the region on an ambulance, China News Service reported.
When the van needed more gas and stopped at a Sinopec gas station in Jin'guoping County. But the staff there said they didn't provide service during the off hours.
Chen's daughter knelt down to plead but the two workers were unmoved. One was watching TV, the other playing a game on computer in their room. One of Chen's relatives filmed the scene with his mobile phone.
To waste no time, the ambulance driver bought gas from a private vender at a high price. But due to the delay of more than one hour, Chen died on the road to the hospital, the report said.
Zhou Jianhua, a Sinopec manager in Enshi City, said the gas station boss Xie Ke was counting money in their room when he heard the noise outside but he didn't open the door for safety reason. The only employee was his wife, according to the report.
