Skaters seek to improve frosty relations with city
CHINA'S short track speed skating team is reported to be keen to make its peace with authorities in Lijiang City, following a late night brawl involving skaters and security guards earlier this week.
The skating team had expressed its wish to settle its dispute with city officials, Zhang Wenyin, press officer of Lijiang government in southwestern China's Yunnan Province, wrote in a microblog on Wednesday.
Members of the group, which included Olympic champions, fought with guards on Monday night in Lijiang, where the skaters were celebrated the Dragon Boat Festival. Reports said 10 athletes were injured in the street fight.
"After they published their account of the incident on the Internet, they said they wanted to make peace," said Zhang in the microblog.
On Tuesday, Olympic champions Wang Meng and Zhou Yang posted angry words and pictures on their microblogs, saying the team was beaten up by security guards and injured teammates were met with indifference at a local hospital.
But local police said the athletes had unwittingly violated city regulations by being rowdy after midnight, which led to guards stepping in.
"During the confrontation both sides suffered injuries," police said.
Lijiang People's Hospital denied any negligence in its treatment of the injured athletes, including skater Liu Xianwei, who was reported to have demanded a single room.
"After Liu was taken to the emergency room, doctors immediately gave him a routine examination," said deputy director Yang Guangming. "But we couldn't meet his request to stay in a single room as there were too many patients."
The skating team, which has returned to Kunming for a two-month summer camp, refused to comment.
The team won China four gold medals at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games last year.
