Skepticism grows over information put online

The Red Cross Society of China was yesterday revealed to have paid vastly different sums to build similar buildings in an earthquake-hit area.

Its newly launched online information platform says it spent 13,523 yuan (US$2,100) per square meter on a health care center in Zaduo County in Yushu Prefecture, northwest China's Qinghai Province.

But it only paid 2,525 yuan per square meter for a similar one in Zhiduo County in Yushu. Both centers were set up during reconstruction after the Yushu quake in 2010.

But a Red Cross official told the Beijing Morning Post that they merely provided funds for construction. How the money was used was decided by the State Council. The cost also covered equipment and related facilities, the official said.

The platform was a bid by the Red Cross to show transparency over donations and their use and to rebuild its image as a reputable organization. However, it is being greeted with growing skepticism after people discovered information not matching that reported earlier.
