Skull trader from US given 8-year jail term
THE Beijing Higher People's Court has upheld the eight-year sentence given to a Chinese-American for selling more than 200 human skulls to foreign buyers.
Ding Hai, 45, with a PhD degree from Florida State University, also received a 300,000 yuan ($44,000) fine and deportation, the court said yesterday.
Meanwhile, the court upheld the five-year sentence against one of the two farmers in northwest Qinghai Province who appealed against the charge of illegal trade.
The two farmers were accused of digging in cemeteries and selling skulls for Ding.
Ding began the illegal trade of human remains between 2006 and 2008. He bought nearly 1,300 skulls at 80 to 160 yuan each from the two farmers and then sold 200 of them at US$150 to overseas labs and research institutes.
Ding gained nearly 130,000 yuan of profits from the transaction.
