Slain prison guard's family given payout

THE family of the prison guard killed in a northern China prison break that sparked a nationwide manhunt have received 20,000 yuan (US$2,929) in honor of his sacrifice and bravery.

China's Ministry of Justice and Hohhot No. 2 prison in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region each sent 10,000 yuan to the wife of Lan Jianguo, according to Changjiang Daily today.

Lan was stabbed 54 times before he was killed by the prisoners, said his wife Li Haiyan, pointing at the shredded coat her husband wore when he was killed. The couple's two-year-old twin daughters proudly said: "My father is a policeman," while looking at his memorial picture.

Guards often worked shifts longer than 10 hours at the Hohhot prison, one unnamed prison warden told China Youth Daily, leading to exhaustion from overtime.

"One guard could be in charge of up to 50 prisoners during labor or exercise time, as the prisoners could be scattered across several square kilometers," a warden said quoted by Xinhua news agency.
