Sleepless nights for under-40s

THE pressures on China’s middle class, those with an annual income between 100,000 and 500,000 yuan (US$14,500 and US$72,460), are affecting their sleep and their sex lives, according to a report issued yesterday.
Mortgages, food safety, children’s education and shrinking asset values are proving a heavy burden, the survey found, despite relatively high incomes.
Joining the middle class as salaries rise is not making young people happy, according to the survey of almost 50,000 people, most of them under 40, by jobs website Zhaopin.com.
Instead, they are becoming the “worried” class and even suffer from mental problems, said Evan Guo, chief executive of the New York-listed company.
More than 72 percent of those considered to be middle class said that they couldn’t get a good night’s sleep, with a third of them saying they suffered from insomnia.
About 31 percent said they had sex less than once a month while around 15 percent didn’t have a sex life at all, according to the survey.
House loans accounted for the major expenditure of 58 percent of those surveyed, with shopping and children’s education also high on the list.
