Sleet, haze cause 2,000 accidents in Beijing
Sleet and haze were the main cause of more than 2,000 traffic accidents in Beijing yesterday. At least four people died in the accidents, police said.
The Jingping Highway linking downtown Beijing with suburban Pinggu District had a 20-vehicle pileup yesterday morning due to slippery road surface.
Two died and 17 others were injured, including two in serious conditions, today's Beijing Times reported.
"The road is too slippery! I couldn't stop the car when I saw an accident in front," one driver said.
Another fatal accident occurred in downtown Beijing when a van crashed into a roadside tree, killing one person. Police in the suburban Miyun County also reported one traffic death yesterday.
Local forecasters said Beijing has sunny weather today but sleet and snow will come again in the next two days.
