'Slumdog Millionaire' director set for premiere in China

DANNY Boyle, the Oscar winning director of "Slumdog Millionaire" is expected to visit the Chinese mainland for the premiere of his multi-award winning film on March 26.

"Slumdog Millionaire" will be screened in mainland cinemas shortly to make it the quickest screening of any film after winning an Oscar.

Dev Patel and Freida Pinto, the stars, will probably also attend, according to the Oriental Morning Post today.

Boyle and Christian Colson, the producer of the movie are planning their trip to China.

The US$15-million movie "Slumdog Millionaire" had no famous stars but it has wowed audiences and critics alike.

It has grossed over US$200 million around the globe. The weekend after it dominated the February 22 Academy Awards it took US$12 million. The number of cinemas screening the movie in North America rose to over 2900 from 1400.

The movie tells the story of an 18-year-old orphan who rises from the streets of Mumbai to become the winner of India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."
