Smartphone thief not so smart, sold pilfered iPhone for 6 yuan

A THEFT suspect believed to be good at stealing turned out to have a bad head for figures after he was accused of selling a pilfered iPhone 4s for as little as 6 yuan (99 US cents), according to police in Xiamen city of Fujian Province.

The 20-year-old suspect, surnamed Hai, has been arrested and will face charges in 11 thefts he is accused of committing in the city over the past month.

In the latest case that led to his arrest, he is accused of stealing an iPhone 4s from a college student at an Internet cafe on the evening of December 10, police said. The victim was asleep but left his iPhone connected to a PC to charge its battery.

Police said they pinned down the suspect, Hai, after checking surveillance video.

Hai was caught by police the next day when he showed up in another Internet cafe nearby.

Police were surprised when they found that Hai had quickly sold the phone to a roadside garbage recycler for only 6 yuan. He didn't understand the value of the phone, police said.

Further investigation found he had also sold a stolen laptop, worth several thousand yuan, for only 100 yuan.

The young man hails from a rural area in China’s Sichuan Province. He decided to stay after arriving in Xiamen in February and finding the city “prosperous,” police said.

The man hardly had any money when he arrived, police said. Besides visiting Internet cafes to commit thefts, he also looked for opportunities to steal by wandering through local villages, where many farmers leave their house doors unlocked, police said.
