Smog, snow hampering traffic in the northeast

While lingering smog is still hampering traffic in northeast China, a new round of heavy snow is expected to hit the area, the National Meteorological Center announced  yesterday.

Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning provinces experienced blizzards and temperature drops by late evening yesterday that is likely to continue through Tuesday, the center said.

Areas in Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces will see temperatures fall by up to 12 degrees Celsius, weather experts with the NMC said.

Odd-even traffic restrictions will be imposed today and tomorrow in Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang, China’s northernmost province, the provincial transportation department said.

Heavy smog has led to closed highways in northeast China since Saturday.

Three highways in Liaoning Province and two highways in Heilongjiang Province were completely closed due to low visibility, local transportation departments said yesterday.

Visibility was less than 50 meters in some smog-affected areas in Liaoning over the past two days.

Railways and airports in Liaoning were not affected, but the smoggy weather forced the Harbin Taiping International Airport in Heilongjiang Province to cancel all 209 inbound and outbound flights on Saturday.
