Smoking ‘Transformers’ upset anti-tobacco groups
TOBACCO control campaigners yesterday complained about the amount of smoking featured in the latest “Transformers” movie.
In “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” the major character Hound is seen with a cigar in his mouth, “which has a bad influence on the audience, especially teenagers,” according to a letter sent to the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television.
The letter was written by several nongovernmental organizations, including the Chinese Association on Tobacco Control.
The movie is “harmful because of its smoking scenes,” claimed lawyer Li Enze.
The campaigners asked the administration to “examine and limit” the number of smoking shots, and force cinemas to run footage of anti-smoking ads before the movie.
The film earned a record 756 million yuan (US$122 million) in China’s mainland in the week through Sunday.
