Smoky mountain alarms villagers

VILLAGERS fear a mountain thrown up by the 2008 massive earthquake in Sichuan Province will erupt after it started bellowing acrid smoke.

The mountain was formed during the earthquake, along with many others. But villagers in Longping in Beichuan County have reported an increase in smoke and temperatures from a vent 70 meters long, news Website SCOL.com.cn reported today.

People can't get too near the mountain because of the heat, and the smoke has turned darker and more acrid, the report said.

Villagers say a sulfur mine was buried under the new mountain and suspect that sulfur has been burning underground since the quake.

An engineer with a Sichuan mining research team named Fan Xiao said the smoke was unlikely to be caused by abnormal geothermal heat or a mine smoldering. He said only a field test could clear up the matter.
