Snake dishes make diners sick
THIRTEEN people in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, showed symptoms of headache, hand tremor and palpitation after eating snakes contaminated by Clenbuterol, an illegal animal feed additive to increase leanness, a report on Sznews.com said today.
The victims had all recovered after a week-long treatment, the report said.
Investigation showed they had eaten snakes at the same restaurant in Futian District last Wednesday and Thursday, said Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention at a press conference.
After eating, the victims felt sick and were sent to local hospitals, which reported immediately to the center.
Clenbuterol is a steroid clinically used as a bronchodilator, but it is also illegally used to increase lean meat in animal husbandry. China has banned its use because it can damage a person's cardiovascular and nervous system.
