'Snakeheads' caught off Hong Kong
FIVE Chinese and three foreigners have been arrested by frontier guards in south China for the attempted smuggling of 18 foreigners into Hong Kong.
Two of the alleged "snakeheads" were from India and one from Nepal, a spokesman for the frontier police detachment in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, said yesterday.
Members of the detachment, who had been tipped off, stopped a speedboat on Friday about 2 kilometers from Hong Kong.
They found 10 foreigners inside the boat and arrested five alleged Chinese snakeheads living in Shenzhen, including a man surnamed Tang who authorities said was the ringleader. The foreigners, who had told Tang about another eight stowaways, were arrested the same night.
The stowaways, 15 men, a woman and two children from Pakistan, Ghana, Bangladesh and India, had been told they could work in Hong Kong.
