Snoring killer gets death sentence

A UNIVERSITY student in northeast China's Jilin Province was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve this morning for killing his roommate, China National Radio reported.

The reprieve was offered because Guo Liwei surrendered himself to police after the stabbing, Changchun City Intermediate People's Court said. He was also ordered to pay 273,332 yuan (US$40,039) in compensation to the victim's family.

Guo said he would not appeal against the verdict.

But Zhao's father, who had requested "immediate death" for Guo, said he would appeal.

Guo, 24, a senior student with Jilin Agricultural University, stabbed his roommate Zhao Yan in his sleep on the morning of November 14, 2009.

Guo's loud snoring often annoyed Zhao, according to their roommates.

Zhao then videotaped Guo while he was sleeping and uploaded the clips online, deeply angering Guo and motivating his revenge.
