Snoring killer gets death with reprieve

A UNIVERSITY student in northeast China's Jilin Province was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve yesterday for killing his roommate, China National Radio reported.

The reprieve was offered as Guo Liwei had surrendered himself to police after the stabbing, the Changchun City Intermediate People's Court said. He was ordered to pay 273,332 yuan (US$40,000) compensation to the victim's family.

Guo said he would not appeal the verdict. But Zhao's father, who had requested "immediate death" for Guo, said he would appeal.

Guo, 24, a senior student at Jilin Agricultural University, stabbed his roommate, Zhao Yan, while he was sleeping in their dormitory on November 14, 2009.

Guo was a loud snorer and this often annoyed Zhao, according to their roommates.

Zhao videotaped Guo while he was asleep and uploaded the clips online, and this had deeply angered Guo.

Six years ago, a university student killed four classmates in Yunnan Province.

Ma Jiajue, 22, was executed after a court in Kunming upheld a death sentence in April 2004.

The bodies of the students, apparently clubbed to death, were found on February 23 in a dormitory closet at Yunnan University in Kunming, the provincial capital.

The Yunnan Provincial Higher People's Court said Ma had "built up a grievance with his classmates over trivial matters."
