Snow causes fatal pileup
MORE than 30 vehicles were involved in a pileup on Jiqing Highway in east China's Shandong Province yesterday morning. One person died and five people were injured, police said.
Heavy snow causing slippery road conditions were believed to have caused the crash at around 11:50am, said Shandong High Speed Group, operator of the highway.
The injured were taken to hospital and a rescue operation continued into the afternoon, China Central Television reported.
More than 220 drivers and passengers were evacuated from the expressway which links Qingdao and Jinan in the province, the fire department said.
CCTV said that more than 100 vehicles were involved in the incident but Shandong's traffic police said there were several crashes involving more than 30 vehicles which combined to cause a massive snarl-up.
By 3pm, the wrecks have been cleared away and traffic had resumed. But around 20 entrances to the highway remained closed, reported Dzwww.com, the local news portal.
Heavy snow began to fall in the area at 11am, said expressway operator staff.
Police had begun to close some ramps to the highway when the accidents took place.
The ensuing snarl-up triggered by the crash stretched about 4 kilometers on the Weifang Section of the highway, CCTV said.
Cold fronts hit many areas around the country yesterday, bringing rain and snow and causing traffic to grind to a halt in some places, forecasters said.
Traffic in some cities such as Beijing and Jinan had only just begun to recover from the chaos caused by heavy fog and haze shrouding the area since late last week.
Many flights were cancelled and highways closed during the bad weather which only ended in the middle of this week.
More snow is forecast in Shandong Province over the next few days.
