Soccer case advances

TWO former vice chairmen of the Chinese Football Association, Nan Yong and Yang Yimin, will be charged with bribery, according to sports newspaper that cited a source close to the case.

Prosecutors from northeast China Tieling City of Liaoning Province have been investigating since May and will soon press charges, according to sports newspaper Titan yesterday.

Nan and Yang were arrested in March with former referees' director Zhang Jianqiang for allegedly taking bribes and fixing games. The three were the largest fish caught in the nationwide crackdown on football corruption.

Nan, Yang and Zhang were relieved of their jobs after they being summoned by police for investigation into match-fixing and gambling in January.

The prosecutors did not say how much money was involved in the three men's cases. But the newspaper quoted the insider as saying Nan received bribes worth much more than 1 million yuan (US$147,000).

According to China's criminal law, anyone who received more than 100,000 yuan could face death penalty. But the newspaper quoted an unnamed lawyer who suspected that Nan would be sentenced to more than 10 years in prison.
